The Museum of Nature and Science is offering their special Electric Theater and Fire & Ice stage shows this 4th of July weekend. These special presentations are FREE to members and included with the cost of general admission for non-members. Both shows run 7/2 – 7/4; times are listed below.

From the MNS website:

Electric Theater – 1pm

Explore the world of electricity and magnetism through this exciting (and “shockingly” cool) demonstration. Volunteers will join our presenter on stage to demonstrate the workings of Van der Graaf generators, electromagnets, step-down transformers, Tesla coils and more!

Fire & Ice – 3pm

This explosively entertaining program teaches about the states of matter in a unique way. Volunteers help the presenter explore how temperature affects matter. Both physical and chemical changes are demonstrated using fire and liquid nitrogen.

Visit this page on the MNS website for more information and video excerpts of each show.

I recently came across this early handwriting freebie which is perfect for pre-schoolers. There are instructions that teach you how to introduce the alphabet to your pre-school child. The FREE ebook provides a writing practice worksheet for every upper and lowercase letter in the alphabet.

The website, schoolsparks.com, is perfect for parents whose children are about to attend kindergarten. There’s a school readiness assessment which focuses on fine motor skill development as well as a section on eight specific areas of child development that are critical to school success.

So, not only can you download the FREE ebook, but you can also look at all of the great information offered on schoolsparks.com.

Last weekend, my children and I got to see “The Pied Piper’s Magic” at Dallas Children’s Theater. We’ve been to several of their shows and have not been disappointed with the quality of DCT’s productions.

This show a was a stage adaptation of Steven Kellogg’s book, “The Pied Piper’s Magic.” It was a special treat for us because we got to meet Steven Kellogg at a pre-show book signing! He was really nice and took the time to write detailed autographs in every book that was presented to him.

The show was really uplifting–quite unlike the traditional story of a punitive and greedy Pied Piper. The production had a bunch of young actors too. It was the largest cast of characters we’ve seen yet and the whole experience was fun!

During the show, my kids remembered that Deborah Brown, who plays Elbavol in “The Pied Piper’s Magic,” was part of the cast in another of DCT’s shows: “The True Story of the Three Little Pigs.”

Even better was that they recognized B.J. Cleveland from that show as well and he was in the audience! Guess both of these wonderful actors made a big impression on my children. I went up to B.J. after the show to tell him about my kids recognizing him and he was nice enough to take a photo with them.

What a nice way to spend a Saturday afternoon! The only downside was that my husband wasn’t able to join us like he usually does, but a good friend of mine came along with her daughter to help keep an eye on my kids.

“The Pied Piper’s Magic” plays Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays, Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays through July 17th and you can check out my review here at DFWmama.com. Hope you enjoy it as much as we did!

Here’s a bit of niceness in the world. John Ratzenberger (played Cliff Clavin on Cheers) has worked with Autism Speaks to coordinate a special sneak peak of this much anticipated Disney Pixar flick for autistic children in New York City this Saturday. To accommodate children with special needs, the volume will be turned down lower and the lights will be kept on–likely to miminmize over stimulation for the kiddos. They’re also providing a special quiet room for anyone who needs a break. Cars 2 opens to the public on June 24th.
