Disney on Ice : Treasure Trove - logo

We caught the opening night performance of Disney on Ice : Treasure Trove last week at the Allen Event Center. It was so much fun – great show!

The performance started out with The Incredibles and some random cast members whose job it seemed to be to rev up the audience by encouraging everyone to get up and move. This opening didn’t seem to resonate much with the audience. I think bringing out a few of the villains and doing some crime fighting would have been more entertaining, as my hubby suggested.

Next to come out were long time favorites, Mickey, Minnie, Goofy and Donald — love these guys! They chatted with the audience about the upcoming stories. The foursome came out one more time and during the finale, and were a joy to watch.

Disney on Ice : Treasure Trove - Mickey & the Gang

The rest of the show seamlessly wove together highlights from the story lines of Alice in Wonderland, Aladdin, Lion King, Peter Pan; and Disney princesses, Snow White, Ariel, Tiana and Rapunzel. Continue reading »

First Coelacanth Fossil Ever Discovered in DFW

Ancient Fish Fossil Discovered in Fort Worth

SMU scientists and an amateur fossil collector from Fort Worth have unearthed a clue to the mystery of one of the world’s most famous fish, the coelacanth (pronounced SEE-la-kanth).

Coelacanth fossil bones have been discovered on almost every continent. Now they’ve been found for the first time in North Texas. Small skull bones are those of a new species of 100 million-year-old coelacanth, says SMU paleontologist John Graf. Continue reading »

Ziggy the Zonkey in his New Home

Cleveland Amory Black Beauty Ranch Takes in Ziggy the Zonkey

I came across a press release about Ziggy the Zonkey. What’s a Zonkey I wondered?

Here’s the scoop:

Ziggy, a 9-year-old zonkey—a cross between a donkey and a zebra—has a new home with the Cleveland Amory Black Beauty Ranch sanctuary in Murchison, Texas.

Ziggy was apparently abandoned and was, thankfully, rescued by Animal Refuge Kingdom, a not-for-profit center that is both a sanctuary for abused animals and a therapeutic center for special needs children and adults.

Realizing that Ziggy’s energy level as a wild animal required more space than they could provide, Animal Refuge Kingdom reached out to staff at Cleveland Amory Black Beauty Ranch asking for their help in providing Ziggy with a life better suited to his zebra instincts.

Cleveland Amory Black Beauty Ranch, a 1,250-acre sanctuary owned and operated by The Fund for Animals in partnership with The Humane Society of the United States is home to more than 1,000 animals rescued from cruelty and abuse, including a zony (Yes, a cross between a zebra and pony) named Gunter. Sanctuary staff members evaluated Ziggy and believe that he will thrive in sanctuary life.

Yay for Ziggy!  Wonderful that he has found a home well suited to his needs!

Recipes for Leftover Turkey

Guest post from Minette at

If your family is anything like ours, you anticipate Thanksgiving leftovers with almost as much gusto as the Thanksgiving meal itself! Are you tired of the standard leftover turkey recipes yet? In our house, we tend to cook turkey several times a year, just so we can eat leftovers. My mother-in-law is famous for her Turkey Curry, in fact on every summer vacation, we beg to cook a turkey just so she will make curry the next day.

While I love curry, I also like soup and my husband loves hot turkey sandwiches the next day. So, I searched the internet to find many recipes for leftover turkey. I am only sharing 12 with you here, but each of these links will lead you to dozens of additional ideas for leftover turkey. I tried to pick the very best ones with the best reviews or that I thought were creative, different and easy. Who wants to spend a whole other day in the kitchen? I usually wait until Saturday or Sunday after Thanksgiving to make the stock and either soup or curry.

Here is Nanny’s turkey curry “recipe.” Continue reading »

November games

Fun Math Games for November

Guest post from

We are all about leaves in our house right now, especially jumping in great big piles of them in the garden! I have two lively children who love active play, so when it comes to learning I try to find as many ways to make it playful as I can. We had lots of leaf prints left over from making fall leaf wreaths, so I’ve combined them with some number games so my girls can enjoy moving around and playing some full body math games.

I made a set of number leaves to start off with. I took our art leaf prints and wrote numbers on them, and then laminated them to make them robust enough to play with. You can write on any set of numbers that match with the number facts your children are working on – and if you have kids of mixed ages you can adapt the games so everyone gets a chance to play, and gets a math challenge that’s right for them. Once you have your set of leaf numbers you’re ready to play lots of active math games. Continue reading »
