Sci-Tech Discovery Center - New Exhibits Open Jan 26, 2013

Sci-Tech Discovery Center Grand Re-Opening Jan 26th

Bodies, DNA Mutations, Heart Dissections, Nano Science and other Kid-Friendly Fun at Sci-Tech Discovery Center this Weekend!

Sci-Tech Discovery Center (Sci-Tech) re-opens Saturday, January 26, 2013 with two brand new exhibits: Bodies in Balance and Putting DNA to Work. Also returning are two long time favorites, Coordination Station and Nano. All of this “Mind-Stretching Fun” is open to the general public at 12 noon on Saturday at the Frisco Discovery Center.

From the day you are born, your body’s systems work hard to stay in balance with each other and to deal with challenging elements you run into in the course of living in a physical world. Your body works persistently and invisibly to keep you healthy.  Bodies in Balance includes 24 interactive stations with tools that explore your body’s maze of complex systems and functions.

Putting DNA to Work showcases some of the innumerable ways DNA has been put to work since 1953 when Watson and Crick cracked the mystery of the structure of life itself: the DNA molecule. DNA has been used to physicians and researchers to detect diseases, by agrarian scientists and farmers to improve crops, and by forensic scientists and law enforcement to identify and catch criminals.

A hands-on discovery area, Coordination Station features rotating games that engage visitors of all ages with simple machines and demonstrate basic principles of physics. It includes a Keva Plank table and an interactive station where visitors can see and learn more about simple machines in action.

Nano is an interactive exhibition that engages family audiences in nanoscale science, engineering, and technology. Make your own small science creations!

Admission to Sci-Tech is free to members and children under two years, $7 for general admission, and $5.50 ages seniors age 60 and up.

Good Night Moon - Dallas Children's Theater

Kids, wear your favorite pajamas and join Dallas Children’s Theater at the opening night pajama party for Goodnight Moon!

(Win 4 tickets to see Goodnight Moon on opening night – details below)

Dallas Children’s Theater (DCT) presents the wonderful, whimsical bedtime story Goodnight Moon, playing January 25 – March 3, 2013. Goodnight Moon is the sparkling musical adaptation by Chad Henry of the timeless bedtime story by Margaret Wise Brown, now celebrating its 66th year.

About the Show

Starring the little bunny in the Great Green Room, this fanciful poem of goodnight wishes comes to life in an extravaganza of magic, singing, dancing and puppetry.  “All the familiar characters from the book are featured in the show, with a few surprises and funny inventions,” says director Nancy Schaeffer.

Goodnight Moon - Dallas Childen's TheaterThree Styles of Puppetry!

Three styles of puppetry including hand puppets, marionettes and Black Theatre rod puppets combine with special effects to create nursery magic and bring inanimate objects to life. The fireplace smiles, a lamp teases, the telephone talks, a red balloon squeaks and the clock dances.  Hand held puppets of a naughty mouse and kittens create the pandemonium that makes this little bunny feel wide-awake at bedtime.

Live Music

Another special element of the play is live musical accompaniment, producing an enchanting, extraordinary nighttime world.  Pianist and composer B. Wolf accompanies the performers with Mr. Henry’s score full of vaudeville, jazz, show-tunes, ragtime and lullaby.  Costumed in jammies herself, Ms. Wolf creates a compelling and dynamic musical experience as she interacts casually with the action.

Will the tooth fairy come?  Who is growling into the telephone?  Will Clarabelle finally make it over the moon?  And something mysterious is very noisy in the little toy house!

Goodnight Moon - Dallas Children's TheaterOpening Night Pajama Party

Attend Goodnight Moon on opening night, Friday, January 25 for extra fun one hour prior to the show and at intermission.  Children are encouraged to wear their favorite pajamas and enjoy coloring, face painting and more.  FREE milk and cookies provided by Tiff’s Treats, and one free show poster per family.

Book Drive for VMLC

During the run of Goodnight Moon (January 25 – March 3), donate a new book for ages 4 months to 5 years to DCT for VMLC and receive a FREE ticket to DCT’s summer show, “The True Story of the Three Little Pigs!” (one ticket per family).  VMLC provides English Literacy programs to 1,000 adults and 200 young children in the Vickery Meadow, West Dallas, and Bachman Lake neighborhoods – helping adults improve their English skills and helping their young children successfully prepare for elementary school. VMLC services are provided at no cost to the families.  Help DCT support VMLC!
