An epic battle between good and evil will play out at the American Airlines Center this weekend in Marvel Universe Live!

Even if you didn’t grow up reading Marvel comics and aren’t familiar with the various superhero legends, Feld Entertainment has put together a larger-than-life production with digitally mapped virtual reality sets, pyrotechnics and live action stunts performed by world class athletes, martial arts professionals and aerialists.
One of the characters integral to the story line is Loki, step brother to the mighty Thor of Asgard, who wants to destroy Earth and obliterate the universe. Los Angeles based actor Max Dean, who plays Loki, looks forward to swooping in via a wormhole and causing the mischief and mayhem his super villain character is known for, as he implements his plan for world domination.
I had the pleasure of Skyping with Max recently and learned that in addition to being a film, television and stage actor, he plays the guitar, composes his own music, and does stand up comedy. Dean composed the original score for the short film Royal American, which won an award at the Tribeca Film Festival. Max is also an avid athlete and a professional skateboarder who is quite comfortable performing spectacular feats. He’s also into surfing, swimming, mountain biking and long distance running, just to name a few.
Originally hailing from Dallas, Texas, Max Dean moved to Hawaii after earning his undergraduate degree in Economics. He learned to surf on the waves of the North Shore. Max has been surfing for about 10 years and currently lives in Venice Beach, California, pursuing his acting career. A fond memory for Max is a commercial he starred in with Dozer, a dog who loves to surf. According to the young actor “if you show [Dozer] a board, he barks until someone takes him out to surf!” Max says that Dozer is more famous than him, but something tells me this handsome, brown-eyed actor likely has lots of fans and has added even more during his gig as Loki in Marvel Universe Live!
Dean was initially called in to audition for the characters of Tony Stark and Loki. He was asked back for a second audition to do a fight scene with Romeo Brown who plays Nick Fury. Max was thrilled to end up playing Loki because he was really inspired by Tom Hiddleston’s portrayal of this character’s conflicted persona in the Thor movies. As for which superhero he considers a favorite, Max loves Spider-Man and thinks of him as sort of an underdog of the superhero world.
As I listened to Max describe the show, I could tell that he genuinely enjoys being in this production as well as the reaction of the audience as they experience the extraordinary special effects and movie quality superhero action. He especially loves to see the happy faces of kids who wave excitedly at their favorite superheroes or super villains – there are more than 25 Marvel characters in the show!
The actor is also thrilled to be part of such a monumental and technically advanced production, which is a huge draw for all ages. Marvel Universe Live! uses 25 projectors and state-of-the-art digital and video mapping to create a virtual reality environment on stage. Simply put, the arena floor will have realistic looking virtual reality landscapes that both the audience and performers can see. Plus these sets will be what the performers interact with during their segments. Sounds like pretty impressive stuff huh?
Max Dean is especially excited about performing as Loki in Dallas because this is his hometown and it means he gets to spend time with his family too. My family and I are looking forward to seeing Max as Loki and can’t wait to experience all the awesomeness that is Marvel Universe Live! Who knows, maybe one of us may just be rooting for a super villain for a change — maybe not.
Don’t miss this rare opportunity to see more than 25 iconic Marvel characters – such as the Hulk, Captain America, Spider-Man, Iron Man, Storm, Black Widow, Madame Hydra and more – on one stage!
