Dallas Children’s Theater (DCT) presents the wonderful, whimsical bedtime story Goodnight Moon, playing January 25 – March 3, 2013. Goodnight Moon is the sparkling musical adaptation by Chad Henry of the timeless bedtime story by Margaret Wise Brown, now celebrating its 66th year.

About the Show

Starring the little bunny in the Great Green Room, this fanciful poem of goodnight wishes comes to life in an extravaganza of magic, singing, dancing and puppetry.  “All the familiar characters from the book are featured in the show, with a few surprises and funny inventions,” says director Nancy Schaeffer.

Goodnight Moon - Dallas Childen's TheaterThree Styles of Puppetry!

Three styles of puppetry including hand puppets, marionettes and Black Theatre rod puppets combine with special effects to create nursery magic and bring inanimate objects to life. The fireplace smiles, a lamp teases, the telephone talks, a red balloon squeaks and the clock dances.  Hand held puppets of a naughty mouse and kittens create the pandemonium that makes this little bunny feel wide-awake at bedtime.

Live Music

Another special element of the play is live musical accompaniment, producing an enchanting, extraordinary nighttime world.  Pianist and composer B. Wolf accompanies the performers with Mr. Henry’s score full of vaudeville, jazz, show-tunes, ragtime and lullaby.  Costumed in jammies herself, Ms. Wolf creates a compelling and dynamic musical experience as she interacts casually with the action.

Will the tooth fairy come?  Who is growling into the telephone?  Will Clarabelle finally make it over the moon?  And something mysterious is very noisy in the little toy house!

The Nutcracker - Dallas Children's Theater

(Win 4 tickets to this show — see below)

No holiday season is complete without Tchaikovsky’s The Nutcracker. Kathy Burks Theatre of Puppetry Arts’ unique and acclaimed puppet interpretation of Tchaikovsky’s masterpiece returns to Dallas Children’s Theater November 16 – December 23, 2012.

Director Kathy Burks says, “Since The Nutcracker is primarily known as a vehicle for ballet, many people expect to see puppet ballet dancers. They will not find them, but will, however, find a great deal of dancing and rhythmic movement performed by unique beings and inanimate objects, which come to life on-stage.  The skill and artistry of the puppeteer gives them breath.  Our production is a fresh, original visual interpretation of a holiday tradition.”

This Nutrcracker utilizes the experimental theater technique of Black Theatre, a form of puppetry in which puppets perform in a stream of light with the puppeteers rendered invisible through the use of black robes, hoods and gloves.  The Black Theatre rod puppets move without strings or any visible means of manipulation creating a dramatic, magical effect.
