It’s not too late to celebrate Earth Day and teach your kids about environmental awareness. Stop by The Heard Museum Natural Science Museum for their Green Living Family Festival on Saturday, April 30, 2011.

From their website:

Chat with dozens of green vendors that can provide you with practical tips about eco-friendly living. If you are a “green veteran,” there is always something new to learn! Enjoy live entertainment, green demonstrations and kid’s activities including kite flying in the meadow. See the new Bugs! exhibit, check out Animals of the World and walk the nature trails. Bring recyclable products to support the Heard’s electronics recycling program. (Stay tuned for more details.)

McKinney residents – FREE ADMISSION (proof required)

Non-residents pay the standard admission: $9 adults, $6 seniors & kids 3-12. Kids 2 & under are free.

Visit their website for more information and to purchase tickets online.

Lowe’s is celebrating Earth Day by giving away a million FREE trees. What kind of tree is it you might ask? I wanted to know too so called a couple of local stores. One guy told me it was a Western Yellow Pine seedling and another guy told me it was a Douglas or Noble Fir. Both varieties are pine trees, so you can expect them to grow at least 20+ feet. The seedlings they are giving away are approximately 4 inches big and they will need to stay in a pot for at least a year before you transplant them into the ground.

Visit a local Lowe’s store this Saturday, 4/23/2011 to get yours.
