Make an ordinary day extraordinary by celebrating the magic of autumn and attending the Harvest Hustle, formerly the Help the Homeless Walk & 5K. Not only can you support this good cause with your participation, but you can also enjoy lots of family friendly entertainment at the event including appearances from Dallas/Fort Worth’s all-time favorite queen and king of laughter, Slappy and Monday; circus performances from Lone Star Circus, music, a slimy experience from Mad Science of Dallas, a mobile milking presentation by Southwest Dairy Farms, face painting and more!

Krewe of Barkus Parade McKinney

11th Annual Krewe of Barkus! Dog Parade and Costume Contest

Downtown McKinney is hosting the 11th Annual Krewe of Barkus! Dog Parade and Costume Contest on February 10, 2013 from 12:30 p.m. – 4:00 p.m. The parade celebrates animated characters from the Sunday funny papers, comic books, movies, and television. It’s going to be Loony Tunes — one big Toy Story! The theme for this year’s event is, “Barkus Gets Animated”.

Mickey Mouse and Bugs Bunny may parade alongside your favorite Super Heroes. As in year’s past, it’s a family affair – the Simpsons, The Incredibles, and the Flintstones could be showing up. 101 Dalmatians will be there sniffing out a good time. The only limit is your imagination.

Patterned after the legendary Mystic Krewe of Barkus in New Orleans, the event will feature a parade, festivities and shopping galore! Located at Mitchell Park, just west of the Historic Downtown Commercial District, vendors will be on hand starting at 12:30 p.m. to showcase their products and services. The parade will begin promptly at 2 p.m., followed by the costume contest that is a must-see experience all in itself.

Registration

The event is free and open to everyone. Cost for participants to enter the costume contest is $5 per dog, and pre-registration is required to secure your spot. However, there is not a fee to walk in the parade. To register, contact the Art Institute of McKinney at info@artinstituteofmckinney.com. Please be sure to include the dog’s name, color, and breed, along with the owner’s name, address, phone number and e-mail address. Prizes will be awarded in each size group (small, medium, large and really large) for Best Costume, Best Dog and Owner Combo, and overall Best of Show.

Sci-Tech Discovery Center - New Exhibits Open Jan 26, 2013

Sci-Tech Discovery Center Grand Re-Opening Jan 26th

Bodies, DNA Mutations, Heart Dissections, Nano Science and other Kid-Friendly Fun at Sci-Tech Discovery Center this Weekend!

Sci-Tech Discovery Center (Sci-Tech) re-opens Saturday, January 26, 2013 with two brand new exhibits: Bodies in Balance and Putting DNA to Work. Also returning are two long time favorites, Coordination Station and Nano. All of this “Mind-Stretching Fun” is open to the general public at 12 noon on Saturday at the Frisco Discovery Center.

From the day you are born, your body’s systems work hard to stay in balance with each other and to deal with challenging elements you run into in the course of living in a physical world. Your body works persistently and invisibly to keep you healthy.  Bodies in Balance includes 24 interactive stations with tools that explore your body’s maze of complex systems and functions.

Putting DNA to Work showcases some of the innumerable ways DNA has been put to work since 1953 when Watson and Crick cracked the mystery of the structure of life itself: the DNA molecule. DNA has been used to physicians and researchers to detect diseases, by agrarian scientists and farmers to improve crops, and by forensic scientists and law enforcement to identify and catch criminals.

A hands-on discovery area, Coordination Station features rotating games that engage visitors of all ages with simple machines and demonstrate basic principles of physics. It includes a Keva Plank table and an interactive station where visitors can see and learn more about simple machines in action.

Nano is an interactive exhibition that engages family audiences in nanoscale science, engineering, and technology. Make your own small science creations!

Admission to Sci-Tech is free to members and children under two years, $7 for general admission, and $5.50 ages seniors age 60 and up.
