Teen Brain: The Musical - The Moms Journal - Dallas Children's Theater

Review of Teen Brain: The Musical, Presented by Dallas Children’s Theater

by Mina Frannea

Teen Brain: The Musical, written by award winning playwright Linda Daugherty, follows a group of high school students who portray the everyday struggles that adolescents go through with school, family, friends and relationships as well as their emotional responses to a variety of situations like peer pressure and alcohol and drugs.

Teen Brain the Musical - Dallas Children's Theater - ZiggyThe show creatively incorporates the latest in neuroscience to educate the audience about how the teenage brain develops. This is done in a fun way as part of an interactive class report that Ziggy (Jacob Segoviano) puts together. Segoviano does a great monologue explaining his research, complete with a brain hat and an Albert Einstein like accent – wonderfully done! An interesting fact we learn is that the frontal lobes of a teen brain are not fully developed which is why teens are known to act on impulse. Their brains process things so fast that consequences of choices may not be factored in. Reasoning and decision making based on forethought apparently don’t come into play until about the mid 20′s. Max Dean, Actor - Loki - Marvel Universe Live

An epic battle between good and evil will play out at the American Airlines Center this weekend in Marvel Universe Live!

by Mina Frannea

Even if you didn’t grow up reading Marvel comics and aren’t familiar with the various superhero legends, Feld Entertainment has put together a larger-than-life production with digitally mapped virtual reality sets, pyrotechnics and live action stunts performed by world class athletes, martial arts professionals and aerialists.

Marvel Universe Live - Max Dean, ActorOne of the characters integral to the story line is Loki, step brother to the mighty Thor of Asgard, who wants to destroy Earth and obliterate the universe. Los Angeles based actor Max Dean, who plays Loki, looks forward to swooping in via a wormhole and causing the mischief and mayhem his super villain character is known for, as he implements his plan for world domination.

I had the pleasure of Skyping with Max recently and learned that in addition to being a film, television and stage actor, he plays the guitar, composes his own music, and does stand up comedy. Dean composed the original score for the short film Royal American, which won an award at the Tribeca Film Festival. Max is also an avid athlete and a professional skateboarder who is quite comfortable performing spectacular feats. He’s also into surfing, swimming, mountain biking and long distance running, just to name a few. Continue reading »

Lone Star Circus - Oh La La! - TheMomsJournal

Review of Oh La La! Presented by Lone Star Circus

Lone Star Circus infuses this year’s exciting circus spectacular Oh La La! with a chic western flair, a great ensemble of music and a talented cast of internationally renowned entertainers.

When Fanny Kerwich, creative director and founder of Lone Star Circus puts together a show, it’s important to her to create a memorable, vibrant and fun cirque experience that everyone can enjoy. Not surprisingly, Lone Star Circus’ annual productions, which celebrate and usher in the New Year in great style, have developed a huge fan following that grows every year. What most folks may not know is that the show literally comes together in about 2 – 3 days. Quite impressive considering the caliber of the performances. Each act is performed by experienced circus professionals who mesmerize the audience with their brilliant skill in the circus arts.

Unique to this year’s production, directed by Kerwich and Dimitri Bogatirev, is a western theme that brings with it a sense of good old fashioned Texas pride. Serenading the crowd in between introducing acts, show host Gary Lynn Floyd has a relaxed, southern manner about him and does a great job bringing a cohesive flow to the production.
